Unfortunately the processor performance is increasing faster than the software demand. There is an old maxim that if the processor performance grows at greater than 40% annually, the old applications cannot use the extra performance. So in 2000 will the 1GHZ+ processors get confined to servers only ? Or will the consumers buy MHZ irrespective of a perceived benefit ?

The exact same arguments have been used since the introduction of the 12-MHz (Turbo) 80286. I remember them well. Something new will always come along to eat up 110% of that spare processor power.

The same thing applies to all the nay-sayers who are warning about a fiber glut, too.
