Can't be known, but it has all the signs of the former. It smells like a MM arranged short. Some individual entity bought a huge lot. Highly improbable that is was a short cover. Only institutions can buy in such size and if it was an institution selling, the MMs wouldn't be on the other side and the public hasn't enough interest to assemble the other side. It had to be a MM short sale into a market order to buy under a thin above condition which prevents price from being distributed upward. The ensuing price action confirms this view.
