I hope this will interest SIFY longs... Yahoo! to settle for Internet guide in India, for now Ajoy K Das CALCUTTA 8 DECEMBER YAHOO! The exultation may be muted in India — at least for now. Yahoo! Inc is looking at an Internet guide rather than a full-fledged integrated portal for India, as a start-up property in this region. This would be almost similar to its eighth Internet property in Asia —Yahoo! China, launched in September this year. Additionally, Yahoo! has several localised web guides for other markets in Asia, including Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. The complexities of the Indian market, numerous linguistic regions and the need to build up strategic partnerships, have possibly prompted Yahoo! Inc to put its footprint on India in stages. Sources in Indian Internet and media companies, keen to partner Yahoo! Inc said that latter was yet to strike up an alliance to localise and develop its property for India and could therefore be starting up with a scaleable Internet guide, later to be spun into a country-specific portal. The strategy could be to introduce the brand, build on the existing number of users and the brand, get a fix on specific consumer needs and then putting the building blocks in place on the base Internet guide, the sources said. However, queries on Yahoo!'s India plans mailed to company spokesperson remained unanswered. China Yahoo! is working closely with Beijing Founder Electronics Co, Ltd, a leading information technology company, to help establish Yahoo! China within the Chinese business environment. Sources said that a similar arrangement too is being worked out by Yahoo! Inc for India and a Delhi-based entertainment company venturing into media and Internet is reportedly in the race to strike a partnership with the Santa Clara-based company. Yahoo! China, the twenty-first world property of Yahoo! Inc, the largest branded portal, with a traffic of 100 million, includes more than 20,000 Chinese Web sites created in simplified Chinese characters and approximately 20,000 Web sites created in traditional Chinese characters. The new guide also features news, finance and weather information relevant to the region as well as e-mail, instant messaging and a personalised Web service, My Yahoo! economictimes.com
