Companies wouldn't have stock splits if it didn't increase shareholder value. So, I guess, the fact they do splits is proof in itself that splits result in a price rise in the stock.

It also generates publicity in the news rags/shows/sites, and keeps the larger companies near the top of the "most active shares" lists. Nothing wrong with more name recognition.
