>>>>>>BEA and Portal Software Announce Agreement to Develop Highly Scalable Customer Management and Billing Solutions for the Internet
New BEA eLink Adapter for Integrating Portal's Infranet Application With Key Business Processes Within the Enterprise and Across the Web
SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- BEA Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: BEAS), the E-Commerce Transactions Company(TM), today announced a strategic alliance with Portal Software Inc. (Nasdaq: PRSF), a leading provider of customer management and billing software for Internet and emerging next-generation communications services. The agreement provides for BEA's newly announced E-Commerce Integration Division to develop a BEA eLink(TM) adapter for Portal's Infranet(R) real-time customer management and billing solution. Combining Portal Infranet with BEA eLink will enable customers to integrate their Infranet applications with enterprise processes and applications within their businesses and across the Web.

The BEA eLink adapter for Portal Infranet, as part of a complete BEA eLink solution, will provide a robust and scalable business solution that can be rapidly implemented and easily maintained. The BEA eLink adapter for Infranet, with availability on initial platforms scheduled for January 2000, will allow customers to integrate Infranet applications through BEA eLink with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and other Customer Relationship Management (CRM) applications, mainframe-based applications, and a variety of e-commerce technologies. BEA eLink's out-of-the-box functionality, as well as data integration and business process options, eliminates the cost of programming complex application interfaces, while the product's built-in reliability, scalability, and manageability improve customer responsiveness and satisfaction. BEA eLink enables Web and e-commerce integration through BEA WebLogic(TM), the leading Web application server.

Portal's comprehensive real-time customer management and billing software is an off-the-shelf solution designed to meet the specific needs of Internet businesses and next-generation telecommunications companies such as data CLEC (competitive local exchange carrier), DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) and other access service providers. Infranet delivers a highly flexible business infrastructure that enables these providers to rapidly bring new services to market and support substantial subscriber growth. With Infranet, data CLEC and DSL providers can also support multiservice businesses to offer basic access as well as a wide range of other fee-based, value-added services that can add substantial amounts of revenue to the bottom line.

"As a leading infrastructure provider in the telecommunications space, we believe that BEA is an excellent partner for us," said Jill Kyte, vice president of strategic alliances at Portal. "Our customers must be able to integrate their new Portal solutions into the complex web of applications that run the communications industry today. Because of BEA's installed base, and the strength and flexibility of the eLink product, the BEA eLink adapter for Portal Infranet will be important for our customers as they work to integrate disparate applications into a cohesive integrated environment."

"To succeed in the age of the Internet, companies must be able to deliver new solutions that can rapidly leverage and extend their existing technology infrastructure," said Louise Smith, vice president of marketing, BEA E-Commerce Integration Division. "The new BEA eLink adapter for Infranet, as part of a comprehensive BEA eLink integration solution, provides a solid foundation for Portal customers to integrate their customer service and billing systems with other key enterprise and Internet applications. Together, our goal is to create a seamless customer system that companies can deploy with complete confidence that their solution will scale with their business." <<<<<<<<
