Off Topic. Yeltsin in Beijing plays nuclear bluff against US
Dec. 9, 1999

Russian President Boris Yeltsin bluntly reminded US President Bill Clinton Thursday that Moscow has a "full nuclear arsenal" and will not bow to Western criticism of its brutal military offensive against Chechen rebels.

"It seems Mr. Clinton has forgotten Russia is a great power that possesses a full nuclear arsenal ... we aren't afraid at all of Clinton's anti-Russian position," Yeltsin said after an informal summit with Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

"I want to tell President Clinton that he alone cannot dictate how the world should live, work and play. It is us who will dictate," he said through the English translation of a Russian official.

Clinton has warned Russia it will pay a high price for the way it is waging war in the rebel republic of Chechnya, in particular its disregard for civilian lives.

Yeltsin, who was speaking loudly and animatedly, made the statements just before a meeting with Chinese parliamentarian and communist hardliner Li Peng at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. Yeltsin earlier met with Jiang and Premier Zhu Rongji at the guesthouse.

In a 40-minute meeting with Jiang, the Chinese president reiterated China's position that Chechnya was an internal Russian affair and brooks no interference from outside forces, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told reporters.

"Jiang Zemin completely understands and fully supports Russia's actions in combatting terrorism and extremism in Chechnya and in the northern Caucasus," he said.

Concerning the warning to the American president, Ivanov said, "President Yeltsin was responding to criticism of Russia's internal policy. No one has the right to interfere into the internal affairs of another country".

Russian troops are poised to make a sweeping advance on rebel positions in Grozny, the rebel capital of war-torn Chechnya .

Outrage by the West at the Russian offensive reached a peak this week after Moscow issued an ultimatum to some 40,000 inhabitants to flee the capital or face annihilation.

China's support for the Russian offensive underscores the increasingly close ties between Beijing and Moscow that were evident in their joint opposition to and condemnation of NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia earlier this year.

Lorne,,,

Good point about how the quantity of gold being reported is becoming smaller. Yesterday it was 2400 ounces from Black Hawk, today they had to add up several sales to make 5 tons from Russia.
.....Tis no physical to be had in quantity,,,The worlds entire production has been committed to paper.
