Y2K Poll Says: 'Livin' La Vida Cerveza' in the Face of the Millennium

beer.com Survey Reveals Planning Ahead and Beer Barter System
The Best Ways to Beat Y2K

RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Forget the hoopla over computer
meltdowns and champagne shortages and consider that beer lovers are concerned
about their stash of liquid barley in the event of Y2K chaos. Almost
three-quarters of beer lovers worldwide (74.2%) have taken steps to prepare
themselves against the potential negative effects of Y2K on beer, according to
a recent survey conducted by beer.com.

Poll Highlights
-- Although close to half (42.8%) of respondents plan to ring in the New
Year with a significant other, a whopping 30.8 per cent refuse to
embrace anything but a cold beer.
-- Close to half (40%) of beer lovers believe they will require more than
two kegs of beer on hand in the event of Y2K bedlam.
-- If there was a power outage, 42.8 percent of beer lovers would keep
their "brown pop" frosty by keeping it outside while 30.6 percent
don't care if their beer stays cold, as long as they had a healthy
supply on hand.
-- Beer lover picks for "most influential of the century" for their
category:
-- Best band: 40.2 percent picked The Beatles
-- Best movie: 26.7 percent chose Star Wars
-- Most engaging on-air personality: 23.6 percent selected Howard
Stern
-- Best magazine: 35.1 percent thought Playboy had the most impact

"From preparing early to establishing an official Beer Barter System
(BBS), the beer.com Y2K Poll demonstrates that beer lovers are not taking any
chances should the taps suddenly be turned off at midnight 2000," said Rocco
Rossi, president, beer.com. "And, beer lovers are so committed to their brew
that if given a choice almost a third of die-hards would prefer to have a
lifetime supply of beer over a million dollars."
Beer lovers are starting to hoard beer, with almost one in five (19.0%)
having made their major beer purchase by mid-November. A word of warning to
those who plan on buying beer at the last minute: more than one-third (36.6%)
of respondents say they would be completely unwilling to give up even a single
bottle of beer should a family member or friend find themselves caught short.
The beer community has also developed a few finely tuned strategies to
cope with a Y2K disaster. Should the world monetary system collapse on
Jan. 1, a Beer Barter System to exchange the necessities of life for beer
would be activated. For example, the poll shows that, on average, beer lovers
would sacrifice 1.6 bottles of beer for a dozen eggs, 1.8 bottles for a liter
of milk and four bottles of beer for a T-bone steak.
Interestingly, respondents would trade one bottle of beer to watch an
episode of David Letterman or Conan O'Brien, but just a half beer for Jay
Leno.
Many beer lovers say nay to toasting the midnight hour with an over-rated,
over-priced glass of champagne. In fact, seven out of 10 respondents (69.9%)
plan to ring in the new millennium clutching their favorite brew, compared to
a mere 15 percent who anticipate having bubbly in their hand when the clock
strikes twelve.
Featuring a ton of fun stuff including a cyberspace Battle of the Bands
contest, free web-based email and a library of information about beer from
around the world, beer.com is an online destination of local, national and
international activities, services and merchandise that are common to the beer
experience. A joint venture between leading brewing, entertainment and
Internet groups, beer.com's goal is to become the top entertainment site for
beer lovers and the global leader for the beer category online.
The beer.com Y2K Poll surveyed 1,377 beer lovers worldwide from September
to November 1999.
