I am part of the public, and I am grateful to the present Fed for providing the present environment for economic growth. In any case, conspiracy theories are for Oliver Stone movies. The Fed's charter is to maintain stability and ensure growth, and indeed if LTCM went bust, that would have been seriously geopardized. Why else do you think were speculators buying puts and selling short in anticipation that as LTCM goes bust so will the financial system, US and perhaps world, as derivatives trigger a domino effect? The Fed did precisely the right thing.
