Researchers Crack GSM Privacy Code
RDSL
08 December 1999
Adi Shamir and Alex Biryukov, both researchers at the Weizmann Institute, Rehovot, Israel, claim to have found an efficient way to crack the encryption code which protects the privacy of data transmissions and conversations made using GSM phone networks.

The researchers claim that their method would enable a PC users to eavesdrop on a conversation in less than 1 sec. A spokesman for one company which uses GSM technology claims that the research would be confined to the academic sector and would never work in the real world.

David Wagner, researcher into computer security at the University of California, called the discovery 'significant', however.
