Dan, I don't think anything Jesus did was a coincidence. I think He was teaching them to have faith. The kind of faith that a child has in their loving father. Children aren't concerned with the situations of the world, because they know that their father loves them, will provide and protect them, and lay down his very life for them, just as Jesus did.

Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

And to the rich young man, I think He was teaching that you can't buy your way into heaven. Where your treasure is, so will be your heart. If you don't have love in your heart, riches and status mean nothing in the kingdom of heaven.
