AOL in talks for Satyam Infoway stake-paper

NEW DELHI, Dec 10 (Reuters) - America Online Inc (NYSE:AOL - news) has been holding talks to acquire a substantial stake in Indian Internet service provider Satyam Infoway Ltd (NasdaqNM:SIFY - news), the Hindustan Times newspaper reported on Friday.

The newspaper said detailed discussions on what it called the ``proposed acquisition' had taken place between the top brass of the two companies.

The paper quoted market sources as saying that America Online would acquire a 30-35 percent stake in Satyam Infoway.

But B. Ramalinga Raju, Chairman of Satyam Computer Services Ltd , the parent company of Satyam Infoway was quoted as saying he would not comment on the issue.

``It would be improper to comment on a business plan,' he was quoted as saying, adding that the company was looking at various opportunities to raise funds and ``such discussions are part of that exercise.'

The option being explored include fresh issue of shares either in the domestic market or in the overseas market, Hindustan Times quoted Raju as saying.

The company may also consider raising the funds from venture capitalists, it added.

The newspaper also quoted Raju as saying the company's subscriber base was growing very fast and had crossed the 100,000 mark.
