Microsoft, Ericsson May Expand Deal
By KIM GAMEL Associated Press Writer

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) - Microsoft Corp (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news). and Sweden's LM Ericsson AB said Thursday they wouldn't rule out bringing other companies into their recently-announced alliance.

``Anything will be possible if it's beneficial for both companies and for the industry,' said Kurt Hellstroem, Ericsson's president. ``Exclusivity doesn't work in this world any longer.'

Microsoft, the world's largest software company, and Ericsson, a telecommunications and cell phone manufacturer, announced Wednesday they are joining forces to develop so-called ``smart phones' that connect directly to the Internet, corporate networks, e-mail systems and other data.

The new phones, projected to enter the market by early 2001, would be designed with Ericsson's mobile communications technology and Microsoft Mobile Explorer, a Web browser that was unveiled in conjunction with Wednesday's announcement.

The companies hope eventually to work together in other areas, like instant messaging and online calendars, Microsoft president Steve Ballmer said at a press conference Thursday.

The venture comes as technology companies are scrambling to take the lead in the potentially lucrative market for wireless Internet devices, and the new alliance is but one of many such ventures.

Both Ericsson and its main competitor, Finland's Nokia, have already joined forces with Motorola to develop an operating system named Epoc for mobile phones with Web access. And Microsoft is involved in a separate joint venture with Qualcomm to create products linking corporate networks with wireless devices.

In a separate release Wednesday, Ericsson said the agreement with Microsoft would not affect its involvement in the consortium with Motorola and Nokia.
