Mainframes are a legacy product in today's world of distributed computing.
The world would be in a big hurt without mainframes. You don't think this Y2K stuff is all about PCs do you. There are around 10,000,000 telephones in NY state. Probably more in Calif. You want to print 10,000,000 phone bills a month on minis or PCs? Using HP printers? How many air seats a day. Going to manage the reservations with Windows? Or NT?
How many policies does, say MetLife have? Where are you going to store that database? What about payroll processing for a hundred million american workers? Taxes. On-line trading. You think it is all being done with a room full of 400MHz Pentiums? Air traffic control is bad enough with it's ancient big iron. God please don't let it run on Windows. It the mainframe didn't exist but just came into being, it would be the biggest gorilla game in town.
