Interesting point, Geoff. And options as manager compensation only add to this problem, since the bulk of them go to the upper management. This is very interesting. Without the actual means to BUY the company, the managers can manipulate ownership of the company such that some owners (namely the managers) have in essence complete control over the company. Yes, a split that brought in new owners would reduce the possibility of a revolt against management. Add lots of options (which incredibly are sometimes repriced if the market price makes the options worthless), and an unscrupulous management can entrench itself as ruler of the company and ruler of the capital invested by all the other owners.

Surely SUNW isn't in this class, right? But I see your point, and it's a very very good one.
