Dishnet to go in for IPO

December 10, 1999

MUMBAI: Dishnet DSL Ltd (DDL), an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and part of the Chennai-based Sterling Infotech Group, is planning to go for an initial public offer (IPO) early next year, reports PTI.

"We are planning to come up with an IPO, but the issue details and schedules are yet to be announced," DDL head-marketing and customercare Pradeep Phadke told reporters at the launch of their ISP services here on Thursday. DDL, which has spread its ISP services to 13 cities and towns through four network centres in Pune, Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi, was planning to take the number of network centres to 11 in the next three years, he said.

A network centre, which also caters to the nearby cities and towns, envisages an investment of about Rs six crore, he said adding Dishnet was also planning to develop a nationwide internet backbone, to avoid over-dependence on VSNL and for enhancing reliability of service.

The company was awaiting granting of licence to have its own gateway, he added. DDL has announced two concessional internet access schemes - Bingo and Jumbo targeted at students and high users such as corporates and cybercafes. Bingo (Big Internet Gain Offer) offers one hour of net access daily for five years (1,825 hours) at one time fee of Rs 4,000, while the Jumbo offers unlimiterd access for one whole year (8760 hours) for Rs 21,999, both costing Rs 2.50 per hour on an average.
