Dan, some months back we had a really interesting debate/discussion here about the Historical Jesus, in which E's husband ("N") got involved, speaking through his medium ("E"). When you read that "a lot of messianic interpretation of Jesus was grafted on later," you may have been reading the work of an "anti-Schweitzerite" scholar. Schweitzer's contention in his book,"The Quest for the Historical Jesus," was that he (Jesus, that is) expected the immediate end of the world, that he was a true apocalyptic, among other things. The neo-Schweitzerites have made a counter-attack against the anti-Schweitzerites lately. "N" has read a lot of their work, doing research for his latest novel, and he is convinced that Jesus was only a "crazy" apocalyptic. You might want to track down that discussion. Joan
