The Cohasset-Panuke oil fields, located about 250 kilometres offshore Nova Scotia, are expected to cease production on December 16, 1999. The Cohasset Project began producing Canada's first offshore oil on June 2, 1992. The fields were initially expected to produce about 35 million barrels, but with the application of additional drilling and new technology, the fields have produced more than 44 million barrels of light sweet crude oil. PanCanadian's development work has extended the original life of the fields by more than two years. The project work has contributed to the Nova Scotia and Atlantic economies and helped build offshore oil infrastructure on Canada's East Coast. It has also contributed significantly to regulatory development in an emerging new industry for the region. Over the past three years, PanCanadian has conducted a growing exploration program offshore Nova Scotia. This includes the acquisition of 15 exploration blocks covering more than 1.6 million hectares both on the Scotian Shelf and in the deeper waters. PanCanadian will maintain its East Coast presence, continuing exploration activities on its large offshore land base. The company plans to drill two exploration wells next year. PanCanadian will decommission the Cohasset Project oil wells over the next several months. Current exploration drilling from the Panuke platform is in the evaluation phase, which will continue into 2000. Specific work plans and associated resources will be determined upon completion of the evaluation. PanCanadian is the operator and a 50 per cent owner of the project, along with Nova Scotia Resources (Ventures) Limited. PanCanadian is one of Canada's largest producers and marketers of crude oil, natural gas and natural gas liquids. Its extensive exploration and production activities stretch from coast to coast in Canada and include a variety of international interests in the Gulf of Mexico, the United Kingdom, Australia and Africa.
