Mark... your post may not be as far off-topic as u think. I doubt anyone will remember, but a little over a year ago I had posted re: a front page article in the San Jose Mercury about the formation of something called the Automotive Multimedia Interface Consortium. This is a consortium of the Big Six automakers (call GM the alpha gorilla in this lot), and at least one big hi-tech company, i.e., Sun Microsystems. The purpose of AMIC is to define interface specifications to connect all manner of accessories to automobile PC's, thus making the auto another form of computer platform with interchangeable, upgradeable parts. Central to this scheme is VUI. I have done a little checking of late, and tho the consortium is keeping a very low profile, and is quite secretive, they are still very active, meeting at least once a month. How friendly they will be to any company even remotely related to Microsoft (the Sun connection) is anybody's guess, but one comment in the article was in regard to Microsoft (and GMGC)demo of the talking car. The comment was along the lines of "not wanting Microsoft to dictate the interfaces, etc."
Still, if GMGC could be a major player in that game... well, the mind boggles.

Mark, totally O/T as well...

The car of the future will be powered by fuel cells. I'm sure you know of both BLDP and PLUG... if you like playing way out in front of the curves, these two will fit the bill nicely.

Regards,

John
