The correct response is probably to get a direct interface and short using it. The process is way more simple and you'll always be submitting a limit order above the current bid.

I shorted LCOS yesterday which is something I can't imagine doing with a discount broker. With the direct interface, the risk for whipsaws was no different than going long.

Also keep in mind that you can short offer a stock
at ANY time without waiting for an uptick. It is more
difficult to get hit but the trade is immediately in
the positive. Usually best done just at the point fo a
breakdown or at the first rally from a breakdown.
