Elmer , You have got it!!, Field speed-programmable CPUs, like FP ASICs. You want to go faster? buy a speed upgrade from intel. It will be linked to their well known unique on chip serial number so you could not give it to a friend. Then all Intel needs to do is release the 800 Mhz fix to jump ahead of AMD. AMD can do the same and a new race will emerge.

Well, you can do it with servers to add extra CPUs and IBM used to do it with memory on minis. Why not?...probably not.
