Just so you don't think I'm really stupid for holding a stock for 16 years, it represents the only a very small part of my portfolio and the only stock outside of mutual funds that I own. Speculative mad money if you will.
You just don't get that feeling with mutual funds. I've traded IMG over the years and owned various amounts of it. It has actually been a good trading stock but a terrible investment. Back in 1993 it peaked in the mid 20's when the company's management convinced everyone that IMG had the magic bullet solution to the R-12 refrigerant problem. Turned out that the product is great and does everything they say it does but IMG dropped the ball on marketing and R-134a became the standard replacement. Since the early 90's IMG has "introduced" a number of other seemingly blockbuster products only to have them fall by the way. They seem to be good at "inventing" the product but terrible at getting it to the marketplace. The next big area of opportunity will be electric utilities. Will IMG be able to capitalize on it? The market doesn't think so; hence the low stock price. If they do, it will be BIG. But that's a BIGGGGG if.
Just think if I had put that money in MSFT back then... :-)
