So how does the Star Date calendar work? Isn't that what Captain Kirk uses, or I should say will be using?

Units of time take on different meanings when your planet isn't spinning I suspect. So not only is our calendar referenced to a particular arbitrary revolution but the length of time from that imagined reckoning of the Birth of Christ to the moment when the calendar odometer trips over to the triple 0's is pretty arbitrary as well.

It is the numbers themselves that hold the meaning. Numeral mysticism.

I am reminded of the excitement of peering over the back seat of our family car to see it go from 9999 to 10000. This time though I get to use it as an excuse to be drinking champagne.
