Mike -
Should Michael respond every time analyst make remarks about the company.
No, silence is often the best response to silly or unfounded statements by minor analysts. But Niles is different.

He has made some very good calls and in particular pegged DELL almost perfectly in the spring. He is probably the most highly regarded analyst in this sector now that Kumar has had 3 or 4 stinker predictions. He has come out very early with a pretty specific negative recommendation. There are lots of potential reasons why DELL MIGHT see a shortfall (see my post on the CPQ thread siliconinvestor.com.

Taking all of this into account, silence in this case is tantamount to admitting the analyst's claims.

Mike, re:<<Should Michael respond every time analyst make remarks about the company. There are many analyst, does he reply to all? If not all does he then give credibility to the ones to which he replies?>> Let's face it, there are many analysts around, some more influential than others. When one of the high profile analysts is quoted on national TV as saying something about a company that is incorrect, then yes, I think the CEO needs to issue a statement that sets the facts straight. Of course, the statement can be made on TV by the CEO, or through other channels that are equally effective.

Lets keep one fact in mind, when an analysts has the ability to impact shareholder value, then, IMO the company has the responsibility to defend the shareholders as well as itself.

Of course, if the analyst is correct in his/her conclusions about the company, then we have a different story. Don't we?

No, playing defense is not always the answer, But, considering the source, Dan Niles, I think he should address this one piece of info. The company continues to perform. The earnings have continued to be excellent. I am not doubting the business model or the results. Michael's primary job is to produce results and not worry about every analyst. However, this one has had a track record of leaking information. I would address the issue this time. I don't think you make the rule to ignore all analyst's. I think you have to take it on a case by case basis.

Hi!!
RE: Message 12257674

I copied some quotes from Dan Niles the last time he spoke prior to the end of the third qt.

"Good chance they will miss their new number they are already carrying"
"Worse than what they have already guided people to"
"Multiple problems from multiple different angles"
"Good chance of missing their new set of numbers"

Mike,
You don't have to possess much intelligence to understand when someone is leading and deceiving...I find it harder each time I hear this scum to believe that anyone believes him...He probably had (and I've heard some one I trust speak of this strong possibility)inside information on that one call last Spring...Other than that one time he has done nothing but trash DELL in an attempt to gain a soapbox..
Would I like to have DELL management respond to him...That's debatable..But, I can think of some other things though..
:o)

Best, Kemble
