I find that I will pick and choose what I will try fixing myself. The current horror is the gas dryer we're installing. Changing the gas line was a piece a cake, but the city inspector came out and pooh-poohed the drywall repair done by the plumber who upgraded us to copper a few years ago. So I wheedled a Honda-compatible chunk of fire-code drywall from Home Cheapot and tore out the old patch. Cutting and fitting the new patch with just one stud to work from was nooooo fun. I still need to sand down my haphazard mudding job and lay tape on it for the inspector's next visit. Then I hope he'll signe it off and I can paint it "as if it never happened".
Our drain-side plumbing is getting slower and slower. Infusions of violent chemicals doesn't seem to really help. I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and have one of those power-rooter guys come out. The last set that was out here turned into a real misadventure. They got their snake well and truly stuck sixty feet in from the cleanout port, and they had to CUT underneath the house in order to retrieve their unit. Let me tell you, the acrimony on the phone between their s.o.b. manager and the Customer (moi) was really something. I wonder if their cut&patch job sucked, and now that's why things are getting a little "rush hour" in our kitchen/washer drain.
