Picking grain or ears of corn to eat was never a breech of the Sabbath. The pharasees were trying to make what was accepted behaviour for the Sabbath into a sin. Jesus did not break the Sabbath he only broke what they were adding to God's Law. It has never been unlawful to eat on the Sabbath. Nor has it been unlawful to prepare meals for yourselves. Nor was it ever unlawful to pick fruit or vegetables off a vine and directly eat them. It was unlawful to harvest. It was unlawful to "gather" manna. It was not unlawful to eat manna.

God allowed men to eat fruit and vegetables directly from fields and orchards even if they were not your own. Men were not allowed to deny anyone to eat from their trees. It was not stealing even if it was not your field unless you tried to "gather" and carry it away. Jesus Kept the Sabbath He never ever broke it. The priests are and always have been CALLED to WORK on the Sabbath... though Jesus said they defile it they are blameless because they are serving God not their bellies!

Matthew 12:5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

Jesus is not destroying the Law of the Sabbath but EXPLAINING IT
