Here's a simple effective way to drywall patch that needs no studs. Take a piece of 1x4 or 1x6 both width and length depending on the size of the hole to be patched. Screw a drywall screw about 1/2" into the middle of the 1x for holding purposes. Slide said 1x into the hole. Position it flat in the center so that the ends extend beyond the hole in the drywall a few inches. If the hole is large use two.Each one on opposite ends of the hole. Pulling on the screw so that said 1x is pulled flat and tight to the back of the drywall.Now fasten the 1x to the back of the drywall by screwing drywall screws from the front of the drywall through into the 1x. Remove first screw used for holding. This gives you a screwing surface in the center and sides of the hole for the patching piece.....I hope this is clear..
