Mama Bear has it right. I don't know why but at times my brain tends to slip to the wrong side too. If you cannot sell by hitting an upticked bid, you try to go short by OFFERING to SELL. Your quote goes over there with the rest of the offers.

If in Mama's example the inside had dropped to 10 1/16x1/8 you could still send your offer at 1/8. You would see no change of the inside quotes, but your offer would be added to the queue of offers via whatever path you or your broker had chosen.
