Dear X: It would be interesting to know what INTC does with the offsetting debit or credit when they "mark to market" their long term investments. In my day of accounting only Banks could do that. Companies like INTC who bought securities for long term investment purposes could only write them DOWN not up. Theory then was not held for sale and securities fluctuate every day. Gain could not be recognized until sold. Hard for me to imagin that has changed. Possibly there is some kind of offsett account in the Retained Earnings area of the balance sheet for these mark up/downs and not running through the operating statement. Dont know the answer though.
