I was replying to Dan's question "how long was it the gospels were written after Jesus' death and resurrection." I think even the disciples picking grain was a breach of observing the Sabbath. But Jesus said that David also did that because they needed to, even though it was technically unlawful, God allowed it. Jesus in the same way allowed the disciples to eat the grain, though it was technically unlawful. The law, including the law of the Sabbath, was not written because God knew people would follow them, in fact, He knew it was impossible to follow them. God set them to lead us to Christ, to make us dependent on Him.

Romans 3:21-24
"But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known...This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ...and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus."

If I remember clearly, Jesus made a new commandment, to basically replace the old law, to do everything in love. This covers the 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10th commandments. What is wrong with going to a restuarant on Sunday for some pancakes, or getting some fast-food? Is doing so not in love? Is it unlawful? Sure, the Sabbath, or Sunday (or Saturday), is a day to relax, but through Christ, we are released from the old, and made new, separated from the old law, and made part of the new.
