I understand what you mean- but hitting is hitting, - and it has to be hitting if you want to get the child's attention- a "pat" is hardly going to discourage a child unless it is hard enough to be uncomfortable- same with the gentle hand slap- they won't leave the electrical cord alone if you are REALLY gentle. I KNOW we all want to use other words for what we do- but they all mean hitting to ME- that's just my opinion. When you take your hand, or another object, and apply it to another person hard enough to make that person uncomfortable - that is hitting (in my opinion). It seems very human, but also very illogical, to quibble about what is spanking or slapping or whopping- it is all raising a hand to one's child, it IS all violence (albeit in our minds for a good purpose).

I don't remember the other posts- except for the one about the woman who studies this area- and wrote the book on dictators- I found that interesting. I was responding only to your post- and trying to pick up on the fact that just because animals do it, and that it is "natural" does not make it less violent, or violence engendering- which seemed to be one of the points you were making.

We probably do agree on this- if you are confused and uncomfortable with this whole issue.
