Mephisto -
Windows 95 - 98 is a "tinker toy" operating system - a real house of cards. Even M$ has been trying to get out from under at least since NT4... but the huge base of consumer applications which count on being able to go directly to the hardware, hack the OS to make specific programs run faster, etc. has created demand that just won't go away.

I would not use Win9X for any purpose that required the machine to be available longer than a few hours.

NT is a different story - the basic design is good but it has suffered at the hands of the "feature rich" M$ mindset. Windows2000 is a pretty good product, solved about 80% of my major complaints about NT4. Now if it just scaled...
