This is partly about Germany, I fear. People here don't like the assumption of behaving arrogantly against Turks, a major labour force since decades, and feeling deprived of social and judicial rights. Especially not those in approval of the current governmental parties; but most Germans, especially if education was more than ten years (the majority) have strong instincts against being visualized as 'Herrenmensch' any time again, and would sometimes overreact in this fear.
The Social Democrats and Greens, who have being playing on human rights policies a long way back, and especially the Greens who have been not slow-mouthed (or soft) in accusing Turkey over the Kurds, when they were in the opposition, are now willing to overlook that timber in the eye of Turkey about Kurdistan. Isn't that hypocrisy - committed during an attempt to forego accusations of installing a 'Christian club' in Euroland ... the Turkish earthquake came in just at time, and so did the Ocalan process and it's effects on PKK - while the process is accused as a political one, a human rights breach, its' effects come in handy for politics!
The previous hypocrisy was the one of Kohl, who did good dealings under the table with the Turkish government while publicly declaring them out of the EU under the Christian club motive. And taking the heat from Turkish newspapers as a promotion for his image...

I am sure Gustave has something to add... (season's greetings, Gus!).

Regards, MNI.
