Aaah, besides all the fascinating-techno-jazzy-impossible-to-understand-mumbo
you mentioned in your post, that's a statement we all ought to give a
lot of thought to… I've read the post several times and learn more
everytime!

I'm beginning to get less interested everyday about trying to determine how the
DD sector is going to save itself, and more interested everyday in how the
outside world is going to bail out the DD industry. I'm convinced that the
current situation we are in is only going to be solved by a HUGE increase
in user demand. Not these trivial DecQ related capacity specific short term
temporary shortages.. We need significant change to come before we see real
profits.

Here's a little info for the Indy lovers we've had lately… I can buy the new MXTR 40GB
DD(in stock) for <$300 now. Pretty cool, but I won't 'cause I don't need that
much capacity really. My old dog 13GB in my DELL is enough for now.

Current projections I've seen are for max desktop capacity to grow to
16GB+/platter in Jun00 and 25GB/platter in Dec00. Imagine, 100GB in
the mainstream next year. We'll see 50+GB/platter in the Spring of 2002!(#@$%^&)

How many 4platter/8head DDs you think they'll sell? Not many, unless
the fundamental demand landscape changes. That's why we see avg head
counts projected to go so low in the next few years.

Until then, my only hope is that we'll see some continued enthusiasm
for the weak Indy suppliers that'll bring them above $5! Then the fun begins!!
