Even if they have a GREAT babysitter- that woman is doing the mothering. I feel the same way about fathers- genetic parentage is not the same as being father- and in all those "best interest of the child cases" I don't give a shit about the natural parents' rights- I want to know who really loves the kid, and who is going to give the kid the best and most loving home.

It is not just Nurse Cratchet who traumatizes children. I was taken care of my own grandmother, who was basically a good woman but who had been reared in Victorian times, and believed that beating three-year-old girls with switches from peach trees that they had had to cut themselves while in a state of sheer living terror was actually good for them, and would cause them to have better behavior.
