Checked the PC adds in Long Island Newsday this weekend. Three possibilities - the posters on the AMD thread live in an alternate universe - Long Island (with a 3 million population) is a statistical oddity - certain national chains not present on Long Island (e.g. Best Buy) are preferentially getting Athlons. MOST adds are for PIII. Several coppermine adds up to 733. Several celeron adds. A small number of K6 adds and a much smaller number of Athlon adds. Didn't see any Athlon 750 adds. Did see one 700. Couple of 550 and 600. Saw some independent chains (two-three stores) with NO AMD adds at all - only Intel. I know extremely well that small samples are not useful for predictions - However, at least on Long Island, the adds aren't showing a groundswell of support for Athlons. Who knows what the many local screwdriver shops are pushing. Also noticed that the AMD machines were on the low end of the price spectrum.

As a guess, AMD is still cash-strapped for advertising and marketing budgets. If they can nonetheless sell everything they can make that's not a great problem for them.

On another note, I would guess that, after a copper contamination event in Dresden, they will proceed with massive caution in reintroducing copper over there. A repeat would probably be a stake in the heart of the copper Athlon.

Burt
