Compaq, Samsung in pact to advance Alpha chips-WSJ

NEW YORK, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp.
(NYSE:CPQ - news) and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co.
Ltd. plan to unveil an agreement to invest $500 million in the
manufacture and marketing of Compaq's Alpha microprocessors and computer systems, the Wall
Street Journal said on Monday.

The preliminary agreement would also give Concord, Mass.-based Alpha Processors Inc. the rights to
adapt the Alpha chip for networking. Samsung, which owns 87 percent of Alpha Processors, builds the
chips under a Compaq licence.

The investment includes Samsung spending $200 million to enhance its production over the next two
years.
