Company Press Release GlobalCenter Launches Global Commerce Service Strategy to Enable Scalability of .com Businesses Leading Commerce Service Provider Delivers Internet Infrastructure for On-Demand Utility Applications SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 1999-- GlobalCenter Inc., a Global Crossing Company and the leading Commerce Service Provider, today announced the launch of its global Commerce Service Strategy -- the only integrated commerce solution designed for scale in the global ``e'conomy.
Three new ``on-demand' applications are now available through the Commerce Service Solution: Tape-on-demand, backup and disaster recovery powered by StorageTek; Performance monitoring tools powered by Keynote Perspective(TM); and Global content delivery services powered by Akamai's FreeFlow(SM). Disk-on-demand, powered by StorageNetworks, will be available Q1, 2000.
The strategy for the Commerce Service Solution is comprised of four areas that are critical to ensure business availability and scalability: connectivity, data centers, ``on-demand' utility applications and professional services. GlobalCenter seamlessly integrates its leading, open systems infrastructure, applications and intelligence into services to provide one single-source solution that enables online business to grow and succeed.
By utilizing the GlobalCenter solution, companies whose business models rely on the Internet, get enterprise class utility applications at a significantly reduced total cost-of-ownership with less capital outlay and fewer internal IT staff requirements. GlobalCenter's Commerce Service Solution provides businesses the Internet infrastructure to ensure high availability, flexibility and scalability necessary to compete in the digital economy.
``The Sun-Netscape Alliance sees a huge market opportunity for service providers delivering secure, reliable outsourced applications to business customers looking to significantly reduce costs and re-focus their internal IT departments on core competencies,' said Dr. Stuart Wells, senior vice president of infrastructure products for the Sun-Netscape Alliance.
``By partnering with leading providers, like Global Center, we can offer the critical Internet infrastructure software, such as messaging, calendaring and directory servers, they need to successfully address these new business models, while driving revenues and customer growth.'
``Racks and bandwidth provide only one piece to the success of an online business,' said Don Detampel, president of GlobalCenter. ``There are many components that e-businesses need to guarantee their performance and scale. GlobalCenter has embraced these areas with the assets, expertise and direction to implement an Internet infrastructure that supports a complete commerce solution, whether you're a dot-com or a click-and mortar company.'
GlobalCenter Connectivity
As a Global Crossing Company, GlobalCenter services are provisioned directly over the Global Crossing Network, the most expansive, scalable, fiber optic network available. The network gives GlobalCenter the control needed to deliver customer content with the highest performance and availability levels that customers demand. The network infrastructure is state-of-the-art, built from the ground-up, and puts Internet Protocol (IP) directly over the fiber. The network is architected with extensive peering relationships to route content to the perimeter of the Global Crossing Network, bypassing the congested public infrastructure. The Global Crossing Network today includes 92,700 route miles, serving five continents, 24 countries, more than 170 major cities and has private peers with over 32 leading network providers with a presence at all seven major public exchange points. This network allows GlobalCenter to execute its number one priority: to get customers' content to their end-users.
GlobalCenter Data Centers
GlobalCenter's geographically distributed data centers are designed to ensure high availability and performance for customers by condensing the path of content delivery. The data centers are physically located in major metropolitan business centers while seamlessly integrating the network infrastructure, making them ``On Net.' ``On Net' data centers are built to specifications that deliver the highest standards in security and reliability because ``uptime' is imperative to get customer content to end-users. GlobalCenter currently operates six data centers and has plans to open 11 more in 2000. The next phase of data center expansion includes additional facilities in Silicon Valley, Silicon Alley, and internationally to London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris.
GlobalCenter ``On-Demand' Utility Applications
GlobalCenter offers value-added utility-based applications and services in an outsourced, on-demand model. Businesses that need enterprise-class solutions can now choose from a menu of scalable applications. Outsourcing applications allows customers access to enterprise-class utility applications managed and monitored in data centers backed by a global infrastructure at a fraction of the cost of purchasing, managing and monitoring the applications internally. GlobalCenter offers best-of-breed technology for its on-demand applications by selecting and working with the leading vendors that are the experts in their respective markets, allowing GlobalCenter to focus on its core competency: delivering the Internet infrastructure to grow an online business.
