Ahold To Purchase 100 Self-Checkout Systems From Optimal Robotics; U-Scan Express Systems to
Enhance Checkout at Ahold Stores Throughout the U.S.

MONTREAL--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 13, 1999--Optimal Robotics Corp.
(NASDAQ: OPMR), North America's leading provider of retail
self-checkout systems, today announced that Ahold NV has signed a
contract to purchase and install 100 U-Scan(R) Express self-checkout
systems.

The addition of U-Scan(R) Express systems will provide a
self-checkout option to shoppers at Ahold stores across the U.S.

retailer, has chosen U-Scan(R) Express as its self-checkout solution,"
said Henry M. Karp, president and chief operating officer of Optimal
Robotics.

Ahold operates nearly 4,000 stores in the U.S., Europe, Asia and
Latin America under various banners, including BI-LO, Stop & Shop,
Tops and Giant in the United States, and has annualized sales
approaching $40 billion.

Optimal Robotics Corp. has installed more than 370 self-checkout
systems in supermarkets and supercenters throughout the United States.
The Company's principal product is U-Scan(R) Express, an automated
self-checkout system which enables shoppers to scan, bag and pay for
their purchases with limited or no assistance from store personnel.
The U-Scan(R) Express system has become the industry standard in North
America and will process over 45 million customer transactions in
1999. U-Scan Express(R) is designed to reduce retailer checkout costs,
