Tokyo Stocks Close Lower

TOKYO (Reuters) - Tokyo stocks fell on Monday as investors sold high-tech and telecom stocks to pocket profits and spend their holidays free of Y2K anxieties.

Market players said investors had been so eager to pack their bags they took little notice of the U.S. Nasdaq's record close on Friday, or results of the Bank of Japan's ''tankan'' survey on business confidence, released before the market opened.

''The market's already in a holiday-bound mood... Players are leaving early, foreign players in particular,'' said Kunihiro Hatae, an equities general manager at Tokyo Securities.

The benchmark Nikkei average declined 66.77 points or 0.37 percent to 18,205.08, while the December Nikkei futures weakened 140 yen to 18,120.

The capital-weighted TOPIX index slipped 8.36 points or 0.51 percent to 1,615.51.
