Spanking of any kind was made totally illegal in Sweden. If a parent spanks a child at all it is a crime. Unfortunately in America we have a system where we do focus on the most egregious instances, which results in several thousand children a year dying of abuse. I don't have the latest figures, but it was approximately 4,000 American children dying every year some time ago. Obviously, this system does not work.

I do think it is an interesting question why spousal abuse has finally been criminalized, and yet spanking is still perfectly acceptable.
