STOCKHOLM (CBS.MW) -- Swedish telecommunications group
Ericsson AB and AT&T Wirelss Services Inc., the wireless unit of Ma
Bell, said Monday they've created an overlay network that boosts
capacity in high traffic wireless markets.

The overlay system combines services on both
the current 850 MHz and 1900 MHz
frequencies, and will direct calls to the band that
has the most capacity. The new network will
serve customers in the Miami market and act
as a prototype to move into other high-density
AT&T Wireless markets.

AT&T Wireless has installed Ericsson 1900
MHz radio base stations in 12 of Miami's most
utilized sites, each of which also contains
Ericsson 850 MHz equipment. Ericsson's
(ERICY: news, msgs) switching system
software has been upgraded to add heavy
call-handling capacity.

AT&T Wireless is now the biggest cellular
phone company in the U.S. with 12 million
customers. AT&T (T: news, msgs) plans to
issue a tracking stock for the unit next year,
which could raise up to $10 billion and is set to
become the biggest U.S. initial public offering
ever.

"The demand for AT&T's wireless voice and data services is quite
high as we add hundreds of thousands of new customers each
month," said Greg Slemons, executive vice-president for Wireless
Network Services at AWS.

"Since the amount of spectrum to carry calls is limited, we need to
seek new ways to increase capacity with technology. We intend to
monitor any and all new technologies that will help us create more
room for wireless calls on our network," said Slemons.

Shares in Ericsson were last up seven Swedish krona, or 1.4
percent, to 512, on volume of 9,636 in Sweden. Shares in AT&T
were up 9/16, or 1 percent, to 57 9/16 in New York.

I know, I knew it would take sometime to get over 400, that was last week. Jim and I both won, a tie. If this stocks goes to 500 before the end of the year, I'm sending a bottle of DOW to voltaire.
