Been thinking on the fundamental design of the number of heads per drive dropping, and the drive to lower unit costs.

It would seem to me that the head positioning gear and increasing precision required as tracks per inch increases would argue for a fundamental shift to a single, fixed, array of heads mfgd using traditional semiconductor processes. The platter would continue to rotate under this fixed array, somewhat reducing seek time.

This approach would require integrating the head leads into the bar, but since weight impacting flying height design considerations wouldn't apply any longer, signal amplification circuits could also be built right on top of the 'head array'.

What do you all think? Is such a leap possible given todays technology, and does such a change in approach make sense?
