Rogers Cantel to trial Ericsson mobile WAP system

STOCKHOLM, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson said on Monday Canada's
wireless communications provider Rogers Cantel (Toronto:RCMb.TO - news) will test its WAP technology,
which links cellphones to the Web, over a TDMA standard network.

Ericsson said Rogers Cantel would become the first supplier in the industry to deliver the 1.1 version of the
Wireless Applications Protocol (WAP) technology -- which reduces Internet pages to fit mobile phones -- to a
TDMA operator.

TDMA is a mobile phone standard popular in the Americas.

``We view the emergence of new wireless Internet applications and WAP technology as a tremendously exciting opportunity for our
customers,' Rogers Cantel Chief Technology Officer Bob Berner said in a statement.

``Ericsson's software, hardware and services have been an integral part of our success to date, and Rogers Cantel and Ericsson are working
together to provide next generation wireless products and services for Canadians.'

Ericsson, the world's biggest maker of mobile phone infrastructure systems, and U.S. software giant Microsoft (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news) last
week launched a wireless Internet alliance to offer Web browers and e-mail over mobile phones. The alliance includes WAP technology.

WAP is the first step towards mobile Internet and third generation (3G) technology services.
