Dog,

Re: SUNW

There is an article in Business Week which attributes SUNW's "branding" of the internet as Ed Zanders idea not Scott McNealy's. Apparently, Zander told McNealy that the company needed to stand for something rather than stand against MSFT.<G>

So SUNW's stock run up is largely a result of Zander's PR concept, prior this SUNW stock was languishing. This is clearly a marketing triumph , ala, the "Pet Rock".

As Far as IBM is concerned, they get it. They are putting a full court press on anything with web, e-commerce, e-tailing, etc. with massive advertising campaign. They are putting their service capability to work in this new arena.
How this affects DELL's enterprise service capability is of great interest. But IBM will leverage any contact with DELL customers into their e-everything game. So it is good that DELL has only a toe into that pool.

These branding campaigns appear to have a greater affect on stock price than actual execution. At least in the short run. Perhaps, DELL should hire some "Branding Expertise" and mount its own branding strategy. SUNW is claiming to be the backbone of the internet with the Starfire and JAVA while IBM is claiming to be bigger than DELL in e-everything markets. Both claims appear to be bogus but they are waging a war for the customers and if the customers believe the bogus claims after a while they may not be bogus. <arrggg>
