Tests Fail To Confirm Japanese Crown Princess's Pregnancy
Tuesday, December 14, 1999
TOKYO (Nikkei)--An ultrasound test and other examinations conducted at the Imperial Household Agency's hospital on Monday evening failed to confirm whether or not Crown Princess Masako is pregnant, according to an agency official.

"At this stage, we cannot announce that the crown princess is pregnant," said Kiyoshi Furukawa, head of the Crown Prince's Household. "It is possible that she is pregnant, but we have yet to confirm it," he continued. "I believe the princess will undergo additional exams at an appropriate time in the future after consulting with her doctors," he said.

The 36-year-old crown princess, accompanied by Crown Prince Naruhito, received about two hours of medical examinations, and the couple reported the results to Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.

Princess Masako reportedly showed signs of pregnancy before she left for Belgium on Dec. 3. She was suffering from a slight fever after returning to Japan last Tuesday.
