Centura Software Continues to Capitalize on Linux Platform
Centura's RDM and Velocis Database Server Continue to Reap Benefits As Among the First to Offer Embedded Data Management Solutions On Linux Platform
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 1999-- Centura Software Corporation (NASDAQ: CNTR - news), leader in e-business and Information Appliance databases and development solutions, is capitalizing on its earlier strategic decision to support the award-winning Red Hat (NASDAQ: RHAT - news) Linux operating system. Centura will continue to support the Linux platform with its recently announced award-winning Raima Database Manager 5.0 (RDM) and upcoming versions of Velocis Database Server (Velocis).
Centura was one of the first embedded data management companies to support Linux, an extremely powerful and reliable open source operating system. Developed in 1991, Linux has since quickly found its way on to desktops of major corporations as well as personal computers. Profiting from the mainstream adoption of Linux, Centura's customers are licensing RDM and Velocis to provide high-performance, embedded data management solutions to vertical market applications. This is further highlighted by Centura's customers who verify the importance of Centura support of Linux as a widespread operating system.
Paradigm Investment Services develops a Web-based investment game called MarketPlayer (www.marketplayer.com). Using Velocis, Paradigm offers MarketPlayer from its own site and licenses it to heavily trafficked sites including CNBC, E*Trade and America On-line. Within MarketPlayer, Velocis manages data on portfolios, securities, trends, companies and users.
As exemplified by Ted Murphy, president of Paradigm, ''Paradigm will use Red Hat Software's distribution of Linux as the platform for upcoming versions of MarketPlayer. Cost and ease of administration are both reasons for moving from Windows NT to Linux,'' Murphy said, adding that ''the scalability of Linux as an operating system is increasing rapidly, and Velocis seems committed to keeping pace.'' Murphy elaborates, ''Velocis' intelligent architecture and commitment to multiple APIs have allowed us to deliver better applications to all levels of users.''
Another application developer with a strategic Linux and Velocis agenda is Merge Technologies Inc., (www.merge.com) which provides information management solutions for the medical industry. Merge uses Centura's Velocis in their MergeARK, a medical image and information archive solution.
''Merge will migrate MergeARK to Linux from a competing UNIX variant because of Linux's emergence as a standard for PC-based UNIX. Access to drivers for network and video cards, and other add-on technology, will be enhanced by moving to Linux,'' said Nick Donofrio, program manager of Merge. ''We appreciate Velocis' support for Linux. The database's portability has meant that we can leverage our original code development, which cuts time-to-market,'' adds Donofrio.
''Supporting the Linux platform provides Centura with a competitive edge. With more of our customer's applications on Linux, it is clear that we are committed to continue our support of the Linux development community,'' says Joe Falcone, Centura's chief technology officer.
