<But the bettors have LOST against Intel - not AMD ! >

Make no mistake. The bettors lost against x86 and the power of installed base. Intel just happened to be at the right place at the right time with a good management team to exploit the situation.

<Then again, maybe Intel is sowing the seeds for the eventual displacement of the x86 architecture by a COMPATIBLE CPU with an even more compelling architecture on the same chip !>

COMPATIBLE CPU, huh? Kind of like Alpha emulated x86 once upon a time. And probably with similar success.
