12/16 08:17 Lucent Technologies and Spring Tide Networks Sign Worldwide OEM LU.N> Lucent Technologies and Spring Tide Networks Sign Worldwide OEM Agreement; Agreement Enables Carriers to Rapidly Deliver Business Quality IP Services MURRAY HILL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 16, 1999--Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced it has entered into a worldwide original equipment manufacturer (OEM) agreement with Spring Tide Networks Inc., a Massachusetts-based IP service switching company. Under the agreement, Lucent will co-brand Spring Tide's IP Service Switch 5000, making the switch a fully-supported element in Lucent's product portfolio of access and core switching products. Service providers can use the platform for high-density session aggregation and to roll out secure, reliable virtual private networks (VPNs) and other IP services such as integrated voice, video and data - without the cost and complexity of deploying sophisticated customer premises equipment (CPEs) on a corporate campus. Using the Lucent/Spring Tide solution, service providers can take advantage of the booming network wholesaling opportunity by offering their customers an alternative to the cost and complexity of cobbling together wide area network solutions and offering business-quality services easily and efficiently. "Lucent's agreement with Spring Tide reinforces what we and industry analysts have been saying all along - the market for core VPNs and other services will continue to broaden as enterprises reap the benefits of the new service layer that vendors such as Lucent and Spring Tide have teamed to provide," said Allan Wallack, Spring Tide CEO. "Our joint solution offers service providers a powerful tool to take advantage of a booming market as these enterprises offload their services onto public networks." The IP Service Switch 5000 is a new class of product that delivers the network-based service intelligence required for the widespread deployment of IP Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and other value-added IP services. It provides four times the scalability and performance of the nearest competing product in the broadband access space, capable of handling 48,000 data calls at 100 Mbps with 3DES for IPSec, allowing service providers increased capacity and capabilities. "The market for managed services such as VPNs will continue to evolve rapidly and presents a major opportunity for strategic infrastructure providers," said Tracey Vanik, Director, Edge Switching & Routing, for telecom market research and consulting firm Ryan Hankin Kent, Inc. "Businesses are demanding secure, flexible services to support their communication requirements and applications over the public Internet. We believe that the market opportunity for this type of equipment will be a conservative $5.2 billion by 2003." With the IP Service Switch 5000, Lucent can now offer service providers two key functions that will help manage the explosion of the network wholesaling opportunity occurring in service provider markets: high-density session aggregation for broadband traffic (DSL, cable and wireless) and tunnel termination - critical functions for service providers as the number of enterprises outsourcing their networking services to service providers continues to expand rapidly. High-density session aggregation allows service providers to funnel all types of broadband traffic onto a single pipe, allowing an easier transition of traffic from the edge of the network to the core. Tunnel termination allows seamless and transparent movement of sensitive traffic across shared networks, keeping network communication secure through encryption and point-to-point connections without slowing it down - a necessity for enterprises that traditionally managed network security, but now want to offload those services to their service provider. "Our customers require three things: scalability, performance and carrier-class availability," said Jim Zeitlin, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for Lucent InterNetworking Systems. "We thoroughly surveyed the alternatives, and determined that the Spring Tide product is an excellent choice for our carrier customers in the emerging space for IP services platforms. The IP Service Switch 5000 is a comprehensive platform that addresses these customers' near-term subscriber management requirements while enabling the introduction of a rich suite of value-added services like network-based VPNs." Spring Tide's IP Service Switch 5000 complements Lucent's leading networking products, including the MAX TNT(TM) WAN access switch and the Stinger(TM) DSL access concentrator (DSLAM). The combination of Lucent and Spring Tide products creates a scalable and manageable wholesale architecture for service providers. The solution also works seamlessly with Lucent's multiservice core switching offerings, including the GX 550(TM) "Smart" Core ATM Switch, CBX 500(TM) Multiservice WAN Switch and B-STDX 9000(TM) Multiservice WAN Switch, allowing hand-offs of ATM traffic to service providers' core networks. The IP Service Switch 5000 will be fully supported by Lucent's NetCare(R) support and services. It is also being integrated with Navis, Lucent's family of network management products. Lucent has already installed the IP Service Switch 5000 in customer sites in the U.S. and Asia. PRICING AND AVAILABILITY The co-branded Lucent IP Service Switch 5000 is in controlled introduction today, worldwide.
