Next-Generation Telecommunications Provider Selects Cabletron Solution to Deliver Advanced IP Services

ROCHESTER, N.H. and PERTH, Australia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 1999--

Australia-based Amcom Telecommunications Leverages Cabletron Products

to Facilitate Data, Voice and Multimedia Applications

Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced that Amcom Telecommunications, Western Australia's leading next-generation telecommunications provider based in Perth, has selected a Cabletron broadband switching solution to facilitate the seamless delivery of data, voice and multimedia applications to Australian consumers and businesses. Amcom will deploy Cabletron's advanced IP services across their new $2.5 million fiber-optic network infrastructure, which will launch in December 1999.

As new technologies - such as Cabletron's - enable the convergence of voice, data and video, consumers, government organizations and businesses can more easily deploy services such as Voice-over-IP (VoIP), distance learning and telemedicine. Amcom, through its new Metropolitan Area Network, provides these services to leading Western corporates, government facilities, and Perth's central business district and western suburbs. Amcom's network also serves the University of Western Australia and the State's thirteen main hospitals.

Amcom's service will offer advanced applications by utilizing Cabletron SmartSwitch Router (SSR) and SmartSwitches to provide pinpoint control of IP traffic, prioritization of content and to further ensure a secure environment for IP transactions. In addition, Amcom will be able to easily manage their entire carrier infrastructure by deploying SPECTRUM, Cabletron's leading Service Management solution.

''Cabletron was chosen for their proven ability to offer technologies that can enhance the applications we offer to our customers,'' commented Andy McLean, Amcom's managing director. ''Cabletron's solutions are carrier-grade IP technologies that offer IP service differentiation based on traffic content and time of day. In addition, SPECTRUM's ability to account for every megabyte transmitted, to predict future bandwidth demands and monitor changes in resource usage is essential for our business. The combined offering enables us to effectively use bandwidth in order to give our customers maximum performance with added features.''

The Amcom switched network uses both ATM and Gigabit Ethernet technologies. Cabletron's SSR 2000 and SSR 8000 are utilized to provide control of IP network traffic, extensive security, port-level accounting and comprehensive Quality of Service (QoS) functionality.

In addition, the SSR 2000 leverages the architecture of the SSR 8000, providing wire-speed 10/100/1000 Mbps switching and routing for situations where lower port counts are required.

''The solution provided to Amcom is another example of Cabletron switching and management technology that enables service providers to rapidly deploy differentiated services to their customers with the ability to deliver multiple service levels,'' said Bill Burger, Cabletron's senior director of service provider marketing.

Amcom Telecommunications has future plans to broaden their new broadband network to additional locations throughout Australia. This will take place throughout 2000.
