Vanderslice is a bright guy and clearly a great addition to the DELL team - but it would be hard to top Mort. Here's a contrarian interpretation of the news that doesn't put a "whatever's happening must be good for DELL" spin.

Perhaps Vanderslice was given his walking papers by IBM because the real "hidden" DELL deal did not happen, the "other shoe" did not drop. And maybe Vanderslice knew he was taking a possibly career-limiting chance when he did the original deal, and had arranged for a "soft landing" at DELL if the deal fell apart.

In that case, the executive shift might signal a new level of hardball between IBM and DELL rather than the love-in being suggested here...
